An Interview with Scott Kelly
by Matt Smith
As if this year wasn't already a great year for Metal releases, a Metal super group of sorts released an album so insanely heavy and sonically pleasing that I am fairly convinced it may take the number one spot on my list of ten albums of the year (see my review). Comprised of Scott "Wino" Weinrich, Scott Kelly, Dale Crover, and Al Cisneros, these Stoner Metal heroes have put together an album that could only have been created by a collaboration of such Metal minds. Scott Kelly was kind enough to take the time and answer some questions I had about Shrinebuilder and below is the result.
GASP: I must say the disc is mind blowing, and it is definitely in my Top 3 List of 2009 Metal releases! How did the whole project take form?
Scott: It was born between Al and Wino, I didn't come into until a year or so after they had made the commitment. Dale came after Chris Hakius decided he didn't want to be a part of it anymore.
GASP: Had you ever worked with any of the people before involved with this record?
Scott: No, I haven't. Dale and Wino had done some recording before I believe on an Obsessed session.
GASP: Did you feel at all humbled working with legends such as Wino and Dale Crover?
Scott: Of course. I always feel humbled by the gift of being able to create music. Working with all of these guys is fantastic.
GASP: This may sound corny, but would you agree this is probably the first ever Stoner Doom Supergroup?
Scott: I have no idea.
GASP: Were there any other artists that couldn't commit to this project before you all settled on the final line up?
Scott: No, everyone who came to it with the exception of Chris has wanted to be a part of it. This project is not something you don't commit too unless playing music is really not where you want to be in your life.
GASP: Were all of the tracks recorded live in the studio or was it over the internet transmitting files type of situation?
Scott: Everything was live in the studio. We sent a lot of demo files back and forth to work out riffs and arrangements but the record you hear was done live.
GASP: Any plans for a Shrinebuilder tour?
Scott: We will be doing a series of U.S. dates in November, February and March and we will be in Europe in April. We will start our European tour at Roadburn.
GASP: Can you see working with the same line up again on another album down the road?
Scott: Absolutely, we are already working on new material. Shrinebuilder is a real band and we plan to continue until the wheels fall off.
